Virtual File Systems for dynamic content in digital production workflows

Today's production workflows garner an ever increasing level of complexity, not only by the number of formats being treated but also the information about media handled with each element that's put into production. Production Virtual File Systems offer a solution for moving from physical file formats and containers to on-demand, virtual file formats with consideration for advanced metadata requirements. Engineered to meet the diverse circumstances of mixed production and broadcast environments, their purpose is to present the various video formats, containers and metadata to the commonly used production and broadcast tools on-the-fly without these being physically existent. This reduces the need for prior transcoding, converting, copying and managing of a myriad of file formats. Benefits are massive storage and cost savings as well as improved flexibility. Workflows can be changed and adapted on the fly to meet changing demands. The Virtual File System for Production technology allows seamless integration of production tools and broadcast servers without needing additional glue or middleware. Meta-Data injection from a rich set of dynamic production information allows for advanced analytics and exploitation on the existing footage. This occurs on the file meta level and also on an intra-file level, which corresponds to a more fine-grained view into media in terms of complex content and format evolution.
