The State of Solid State Lighting: Color Rendering Index and Metamerism Considerations

Jonathan Erland (Science & Technology Council of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, USA)

This is the first of several reports and assessments on the advent of new lighting technologies for the motion picture field. The use of Solid State Lighting is entering motion picture production, which for some time has utilized multiple light sources, e.g. Tungsten, HMI and Fluorescent, and therefore an understanding of the color rendering implications of such sources is critical. In this initial report, we propose to demonstrate the improper application of such metrics and terms as Color Rendering Index (CRI), "metamerism" and "Kelvin Temperature" and/or "Degrees Kelvin" current in our industry, and propose more appropriate terms with which to discuss these issues. While such terms may have been adequate when discussing direct human observation of a scene, image capture devices – be they film-based or digital – impose their own filter-set to which will be added the filter-set of the display medium. The results may depart significantly from the direct human observation. Solid State Lighting promises substantial improvements in facility and energy efficiency but, as with other lighting technologies, must be adopted with great care by cinematographers to avoid costly post production remediation. Equipment manufacturers need to be guided by accurate and readily available science lest they confuse, confound and jeopardize the adoption of this, as well as other desirable new technologies. This report will also describe and demonstrate the various types of solid state devices presently available for such applications, identify the developing trends of this technology and assess the potential advantages, e.g. efficacy in terms of power consumption, weight, heat, flexibility, etc., and the potential disadvantages, e.g. colorimetry issues, frequency, cost, etc.
