With the introduction of file-based workflows this time has once again increased due to the need for post-processing. However, recent developments now allow for the creation of dailies in file-based workflows on the set during production, rather than overnight at a post-production facility, once again providing rapid feedback for the cinematographer and director. In addition, these dailies can be color corrected so the images can be seen with the cinematographers visual intent intact. Rather than simple playback, the generated dailies can be color corrected--preserving the cinematographer's visual intent and providing guidance to the final colorist--and provided to the editorial department as proxies for editing. Additionally, multiple formats of dailies can be generated including formats suitable for review on the set, on mobile handheld devices, or via DVD. This paper examines the following issues: - The need to support a wide variety of image formats from the various file-based camera systems. - Performance of on-set dailies generation with current hardware systems. - Data management and safeguarding requirements for on-set systems. - Practical considerations of on-set systems, including noise, power, cooling, and space requirements. - Color calibration and management tools for accurate on-set viewing. - Specialized requirements for color correction tools to be used in an on-set environment by non-colorists. - Integrating on-set generated files into the post-production workflow. - Integration of the dailies functions into the current duties of DITs (Digital Image Technicians) and DMTs (Data Management Technicians).
