Proposed New Simplified RGB Gamut Display with True Color Saturation and Value Scales

Dan Baker (Tektronix, Inc., USA)

Delivery Method: Word doc/PPT presentation Paper Content (abstract): The Vector display is a popular analysis tool for assessing the color of a video image. However, the Vector display does not allow the determination of color Saturation or color Value as is sometimes believed. In fact there is no known real-time Waveform or Vector type XY display that directly indicates the color Saturation and Value of the signal. What is needed is a new display tool that clearly shows the artistic metrics of Saturation, Value and Lightness combined with RGB gamut limits allowing a colorist to adjust live signals back into gamut such that the desired image quality is maintained. Therefore, this paper proposes and describes a new real-time display technology in the format of a simplified, 2-dimensional, triangular color space bounded by the RGB signal (gamut) limits. It details how this proposed format can be used as a tool to determine so called “legal” versus “illegal” RGB signal-limit excursions for various RGB gamuts. This paper then demonstrates how it can be used as an aid to adjust an illegal signal back into RGB gamut maintaining either Saturation or Lightness to mitigate image degradation. The paper describes how the proposed display’s luminance axis could be used to perform RGB gamma-gray-scale tracking of high and low light levels. Lastly, this paper describes how this new display could be used along with the traditional Vector display to analyze the Saturation, Value and relative Hue of selected parts of example video images.
