Pitch Blue - A Real Time HDTV Store and Forward Program Delivery System

CBS Worldwide Distribution (CWD), Warner Bros Global Digital Media eXchange (GDMX) and Ascent Media Group are some of the largest distributors of syndicated programming domestically and internationally with a footprint of over 1800 locations, which includes 1400 commercial television stations. In 2009, CBS/Warner Bros/Ascent Media have created a platform for distributing HDTV syndicated content. The paper will contain the technical details of the end-to-end Pitch Blue system, including a discussion of the origination, distribution, reception, storage, and play-to-air systems. Pitch Blue will employ 1920 x 1080 /59.94 AVC/MPEG-4 video compression and will allow for 5.1 Surround Sound, stereo audio and Second Audio Program (SAP), as well as a variety of Vertical ANCillary data (VANC) services, such as CEA-608 and CEA-708 captions, audio metadata, AFD and other SMPTE 334 services. The local station’s “Pitch Blue catch server” will be capable of receiving two separate satellite transmissions. The server will contain three Terabytes of RAID-5 storage and be able to play out High Definition HDSDI signals, down converted standard definition SDI signals, as well as FTP file transfers and transcoding to MPEG2 based devices. The servers will also respond to standard VDCP automation control commands. This paper will detail the command and control system for conveying record and program schedules to the 800 Pitch Blue catch servers, as well as the error correction protocol and retransmission methods for replacing error packets. The paper will review the insertion process for splicing triggers using the SCTE-35 protocol. Finally, the paper will detail the bit budget and RF link budget required for DVB-S2 modulation to ensure the reliability factor of 99.96%.
