A Multi-format Hybrid Transcoding Platform

As content producers adopt file-based workflows, and viewers demand a wider variety of delivery formats, the need for faster and more efficient ways to encode and transcode video files and metadata has greatly increased. In this paper, This paper will describe a new multi-format transcoding platform which combines Intel and Cell processors to provide improved performance and high efficiency for post-production tasks and customer workflows. An example system will be presented that can support a variety of codec formats including proxy, J2K, MPEG2, AVC/H.264, DNxHD, for resolution independent video data contained in a wide variety of file wrappers. In addition to high-performance transcoding, this system can also be used to perform complex processing and multi-tasking operations, in faster than real-time, due to its aggregate computational power of 3.2 Teraflops. This new platform has been designed with a flexible, scalable, and open architecture that includes Java applications, powerful metadata management, and SOAP interfaces to enable integration with a variety of workflows and third-party components. This paper will describe technical details of the processing architecture, benefits and example workflows for this platform.
