Converting satellite-enabled video networks to MPEG-4 compression and DVB-S2 modulation allows operators to realize significant bandwidth savings and additional subsequent revenue generation, thanks to increased programming opportunitiesthe increased programming the additional bandwidth makes available. But do the bandwidth savings and potential increased revenue convert into enough to offset the cost of purchasing all new HD receivers and HD programming for a private network? This presentation will explore strategies to move to HD without expending exorbitant bandwidth costs. Among the ideas presented will be: 1) Moving to MPEG-4 HD codecs from MPEG-2 2) Transitioning to HD content creation 3) Maximizing the DVB-S2 modulation spec 4) Converting to a file-based broadcasting platform 5) Simulcasting to legacy TV monitors at the receive sites This presentation will enable attendees to understand the basics of MPEG-4/h.264 video compression and the acceptable lower bitrates you can usethat can be used. It will review the different media distribution options available, such as, DVDs, fiber and satellite connections, and it will explore the next generation of hardware and software decoders.
