When we used NTSC or PAL, our facilities supported one format, and other formats were not expected to work. Today, all formats are expected to work together, and we trust our hardware and software to perform these complex conversions correctly. Yet problems abound: mismatched color matrices, field dominance reversal, wrong color subsampling, lip-sync, and more. This paper will discuss the development of a new test pattern that makes these errors visually apparent.
