S-Log: A new LUT for digital production mastering and interchange applications

Color correction tools, file formats, and capture devices are increasingly processing linear, high-dynamic range, color-component data, which is often stored in high-precision floating point formats. However, a wide variety of existing imaging and video formats as well as processing tools are designed to work with 10 / 12 bit integer data. A newly proposed look-up table, the FS-Log LUT, is an attempt to bridge these worlds. With the availability of such a wide variety of acquisition devices, with their limited number of bits, it was determined that any single integer-based, log-encoding would not meet the demanding quality requirements exhibited by this wide range of imaging scenarios. Thus, a FS-Log (Digital Production Mastering Log) interchange format is proposed, where the limits to the dynamic-range are tailored to the imaging environment. A colorimetry metadata packet is transmitted with the transformed data and carries this information, so the original high-dynamic range data can be effectively recovered. Examining the choice of color spaces, a high number of wide gamut acquisition and display devices have become available. The colorimetry metadata packet also transmits the color space information enabling its precise reproduction. This paper will describe in detail the conditions for the design, and the technical characteristics of the FS-Log LUT for the processing of HD, 2K and 4K color data in digital production mastering applications.
