Exhibit Hall OpenGrand Ballroom Salons 3-6 Tuesday 1:00 pm- 7:00 pm Error Concealment Methods for Improving HD Video Quality in Internet TransportBenny Bing (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA); Camille Mazataud (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA) This paper presents new error concealment (EC) schemes for the H.264 and VC-1 codecs. These schemes enhance HD video quality in online Internet transmission without relying on feedback mechanisms. We propose a new EC method, which is shown to be superior to existing methods, including those from the JM reference software. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) improvement can be substantial (5 to 6 dB for a variety of HD videos under a packet loss rate of 20% and a quantization parameter value of 20). Although the scheme is not dependent on the use of error reslience methods such as flexible macroblock ordering (FMO), the best performance is achieved when FMO is employed. We then describe a reduced complexity error concealment method, which is shown to be nearly as effective as the original proposed method in many cases. We will compare the performance of these schemes when applied to the H.264 and VC-1 codecs. Finally, we will provide demos that clearly illustrate the benefits of the EC methods.
