While automation of steps like ingest, transcode, playout and delivery increase efficiencies and allow to handle increasing complexity and volume, it seems rather difficult to significantly improve essential business functions like work order management, scheduling, accounting etc. in the context of a media production environment. This is where most of today’s media companies have enormous deficits. The root of this problem lies in an inefficient coordination of those functions and tasks performed by employees and systems in-house or at affiliates, suppliers or clients. All task and their interdependencies can be described in a business process – and every media company has their very individual processes. While other industries have long ago started to manage, automate and control their processes with the help of software systems, the M&E industry failed to take advantage of that approach yet. This was partly due to the dynamic and creativity of media production processes. Indeed, new web-based technologies, a new media-aware workflow architecture and new methodologies were necessary to handle flexible, fast changing processes in the media environment. With that, it is possible to obtain the benefits of Workflow Automation like quality and efficiency gains without compromising on flexibility or responsiveness. This paper dissects the problems and challenges a typical media company faces and illustrates live and in 3D the structure of a business process concept, starting with the implementation of the workflows, showing the benefits of Workflow Management and finally showing the daily operations in a process enterprise with a standardized quality management, based on samples of modern process based companies in the Postproduction and Broadcasting sector.
