Advancements and Innovation in Film Scanning Technologies

With respect to film scanners, there are a few main differentiators: scanning speed, image stabilization, safe film handling, and versatility to address a multitude of applications. The goal is to combine the advantages of different classes of telecines and scanners and deliver a solution that is suitable for all different workflows. All while meeting fast scanning requirements without sacrificing quality. To meet this target, a solution needs to be high-speed, steady, user-friendly, low in initial and operational costs and extremely gentle with the film. A combination of innovative technologies has born an extremely versatile new film scanner, ideal for dailies scanning, EDL/conform scanning for features and short-form, as well as restoration and archive applications. Major advancements in scanning technology include Time Delay Integration (TDI) Sensor technology, which allows extremely fast film scans at low light levels. Customized TDI sensors offers increased sensitivity at about 50 times higher than classic CCD line sensors. Another innovation is the use of an optical perforation detection system comprising of an IR Light Source, and a separate Line Camera, which reads and measures the perforations. A touch-free Optical Pin Registration is used to scan film perforations, rather than using mechanical pins, which means no stress is placed on film. The integrated dedicated processor offers FPGA image processing for repositioning and stabilizing the image. In conjunction with a continuous-motion capstan film transport, another development is a new precision roller gate, which provides smooth and safe film handling, even with fragile, shrunken and legacy film stocks. One more key scanner innovation is that the LED illumination system is capable of adapting its spectral wavelengths for different film stocks and is powerful enough to allow fast line scanning.
